Are you living by rules you never chose?

6 Simple ways to Practice Mindfulness every day (Even when life is busy) (Link at the end)

Read time: 5 minutes

🌞Hey’all - Good morning!

Some of the rules we follow were never consciously chosen by us.

"Be practical."
"Don't disappoint people."
"Success means earning more."
"Good people always say yes."
"You should have everything figured out by this age."
"That's just not how people like us do things."

We hear these messages so often that eventually...
We mistake them for our own beliefs.

But a belief can be familiar without being true for you.

Today, let's do something different:
Separate your values from someone else's expectations.

Spiritual Reminder

A map can be useful.
But if you discover the map was drawn for someone else's destination...

Following it perfectly won't necessarily take you where you want to go.
Your life deserves a map that reflects your own values, priorities, and direction.

Today’s Ritual

The "Personal rulebook" Technique

Take a piece of paper and write:
"Rules I seem to be living by..."

Then write five.
Don't judge them.
Just notice them.

For example:

"I shouldn't ask for help."
"I must always be productive."
"I should keep everyone happy."
"Changing direction means I failed."
"I have to follow the traditional path."

Now comes the important part.

Beside each one, write:
"Did I choose this, or did I inherit it?"

That one sentence can reveal a lot.

3 Techniques

The "Who said so?" Test

Take one belief that's limiting you.

Ask yourself:

Who taught me this?
It could have come from family, school, society, culture, friends, work, or past experiences.

Understanding where a belief came from makes it easier to decide whether it still belongs in your life.

The "Rewrite the Rule" Method

Take an old rule and rewrite it into something that supports your values.

Instead of:
"I must never disappoint anyone."

Try:
"I can disappoint someone and still be a good person."

Instead of:
"I have to know exactly what I'm doing."

Try:
"I am allowed to learn while moving forward."

Instead of:
"I should always be available."

Try:
"My time and energy deserve boundaries too."

Don't create positive slogans.
Create believable rules you can actually live by.

The "Tiny Rebellion"

Choose one harmless rule you've decided no longer serves you.
Then break it gently.

Wear something you've been saving.
Take yourself out for coffee.
Say no without giving a long explanation.
Try something outside your usual routine.
Spend an hour doing something simply because you enjoy it.

You aren't rebelling against people.

You're reminding yourself:
"I am allowed to make conscious choices."

Today's Motivation

C.H.O.I.C.E.

C: Check your beliefs
H: Hear where they came from
O: Observe what still serves you
I: Identify your values
C: Create better personal rules
E: Experiment with living them

Growing up isn't only about learning more rules.
Sometimes it's about deciding which rules you no longer need.

Affirmation for the Day

"I choose my values consciously.
I release expectations that no longer serve me and give myself permission to create a life that feels true to who I am."

Today's Challenge

Write down one rule you've been following for years.
Then complete these three sentences:

I learned this from: ______
It helped me when: ______
Today, I choose to: ______

Don't try to rewrite your entire life.

Just examine one rule.
Because sometimes the next stage of personal growth doesn't require becoming someone new.
