Do you sometimes spend money just to feel better?

Simple solo challenges to reset your mind and change your life (Link at the end)

Read time: 5 minutes

🌞Hey’all - Good morning!

Sometimes you don't really want the thing.
You want the feeling you imagine it will give you.

A stressful day...
You order something.

A boring evening...
You start browsing.

A difficult conversation...
You buy yourself a little treat.

You feel lonely...
You open a shopping app.

For a few minutes, it works.
You feel excited.
Distracted.
Rewarded.

Then the excitement disappears.
And the bill remains.

This is sometimes called emotional spending using shopping or spending as a way to regulate difficult emotions.

The answer isn't to feel guilty about every purchase.

It's to learn one important skill:
Pause between the feeling and the spending.

Spiritual Reminder

Money problems aren't always caused by mathematics.

Sometimes they're connected to emotions.
We spend when we're stressed.
We spend when we're celebrating.
We spend when we're lonely.
We spend when we want to feel successful.
We spend when we want something to look forward to.

So if you're trying to improve your finances, don't only look at your bank account.
Look at your emotional triggers.

Because financial discipline becomes much easier when you understand why you spend, not just how much.

You don't need to stop enjoying your money.
You need to stop letting difficult emotions decide where your money goes.

Today’s Ritual

The "Name before you buy" Technique

The next time you suddenly want to purchase something that wasn't planned, don't immediately ask:
"Can I afford this?"

First ask yourself:
"What am I feeling right now?"

Maybe it's:
Stress.
Boredom.
Loneliness.
Frustration.
Reward-seeking.
Sadness.

Write the emotion down.
Then wait 10 minutes.

You aren't saying no to yourself.
You're simply making sure you're buying the product and not trying to buy your way out of a feeling.

3 Techniques

● The 24-hour Cart

Found something you suddenly need?
Put it in your cart.
Don't buy it.
Wait 24 hours.

If you still genuinely want it tomorrow and it fits your budget, decide then.
This is especially useful for clothes, gadgets, online deals and other unplanned purchases.

Sometimes desire disappears when the emotion that created it settles.

● The "Same feeling, different reward" Method

When you notice an emotional spending trigger, prepare a cheaper alternative that gives you a similar feeling.

If you're stressed:
Take a shower, walk outside, listen to music.

If you're bored:
Try a new recipe, game, book or hobby.

If you're lonely:
Call someone you enjoy talking to.

If you want a reward:
Make your favorite drink and take 20 quiet minutes for yourself.

The goal isn't to remove pleasure.
It's to stop making shopping your default source of pleasure.

● The "Cost per feeling" Check

Before buying something impulsively, write:
Price: ₹_____
Feeling I'm trying to change: _____
How long will the excitement probably last? _____

Then ask:
"Is there a cheaper way to give myself this feeling?"

Sometimes you'll still buy it.
That's completely fine.

The point is not deprivation.
The point is conscious spending.

Today's Motivation

P.A.U.S.E. Money Rule

When an unplanned purchase appears:

P: Pause
A: Acknowledge the emotion
U: Understand the trigger
S: Search for another reward
E: Evaluate the purchase tomorrow

A ten-minute pause can prevent a purchase you'll regret for ten days.

Affirmation for the Day

"I can comfort myself without automatically spending.
I make financial choices from clarity, not from temporary emotions."

🎁 Today's 5-Minute Money Reset

Open your recent purchases.
Find one unplanned purchase you made recently.
Don't judge yourself.

Instead, complete these three sentences:
Before buying it, I was feeling __________.
I wanted the purchase to make me feel __________.
Next time, I will try __________ first.

That's it.

You're not trying to become perfect with money.
You're learning your pattern.
And once you can see the pattern, you can change it.
